Sarah Palin |

A few minutes ago John McCain picked Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, as his running mate. I have never heard of her and I doubt if anyone outside Alaska has
heard of her. She has very little experience. Alaska is not a swing state and only has a handful of electoral votes. So what's the method to his apparent
madness? Does he really think she will attract Hillary supporters?

Attract...women voters, pro-lifers, be able to say he is for women since she could potentially be the first woman VP and plus if I am not mistaken, her husband
is in the oil business :)

Palin Speaks to Newsmax About McCain, Abortion, Climate Change
Friday, August 29, 2008 10:40 AM By: Mike Coppock (Sarah Palin has emerged as John McCain's vice-presidential running mate. Palin talked to Newsmax magazine for its upcoming September 2008 issue about Alaskan oil, global warming, and John McCain.) Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is a God-fearing, gun-toting former beauty queen who could just become America's next vice president. In Alaska, the right to bear arms means staying on top of the food chain. Palin, a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association, hunts, shoots, and fishes. Husband Todd holds a commercial fishing license for salmon. In the mid-1990s, when Todd got a job working on Alaska's North Slope, Palin decided to occupy herself by becoming mayor of Wasilla, the state's fastest-growing community. As mayor, she gradually grew frustrated with Alaska's "good ol' boy" style of governance -- so she decided to do something about it. She ran for governor in 2006 and won, defeating popular former Democratic Gov. Tony Knowles. Palin's victory made her Alaska's first female chief executive, and its youngest. Now, many insiders believe this 44-year-old mother of five would add a strong conservative presence to the GOP ticket. Palin tells Newsmax that it's high time Congress allows the development of Alaska's wealth of oil and gas. She doubts global warming stems from human activity, and she considers herself both a fiscal and social conservative. Are you open to running as McCain's vice president? Palin: I have so much on my plate as governor, it's hard to even imagine such an offer. I would just have to cross that bridge when it comes. What do you think of McCain's chances, and what should he and the GOP do to win in November? I believe John McCain will be our next president. To win, he needs to continue his message that America needs leadership devoted to the public interest -- not the special interest. The GOP needs to live the planks of its platform, not just offer lip service. How did you pull off your election victory as governor? Alaska was ready for a positive change and tired of the good ol' boy network. It caused many Alaskans to lose faith in their government. People want faith in their government. I have been able to pass a comprehensive reform law and place the state's checkbook online. You can be a reformer and also be a conservative. And your stand on abortion? I'm pro-life. I'll do all I can to see every baby is created with a future and potential. The legislature should do all it can to protect human life. Politically, how would you describe yourself? Fiscally and socially, I am a conservative. My respect for the three different branches of government and the balance between them has been my guide. If you were running for president, what causes would you champion? I would push for a strong military and a sound energy policy. I believe that Alaska can help set an example on energy policy. Speaking of energy, how much oil and gas does America really have? We have billions and billions of barrels of oil and trillions of feet of natural gas. We have so much potential from tapping our resources here in Alaska. And we can do this with minimum environmental impact. We have a very pro-development president in President Bush, and yet he failed to push for opening up parts of Alaska to drilling through Congress -- and a Republican-controlled Congress, I might add. I thought when we hit $100 a barrel for oil it would have been a psychological barrier that would have caused Congress to reconsider, but they didn't. Now we are approaching $200 a barrel. It's nonsense not to tap a safe domestic source of oil. I think Americans need to hold Congress accountable on this one. What is your take on global warming and how is it affecting our country? A changing environment will affect Alaska more than any other state, because of our location. I'm not one though who would attribute it to being man-made. © 2008 Newsmax. All rights reserved. ![]() |

I saw Sarah on the evening news this evening. She is a classy lady. McCain, ever the maverick, has pulled a Big Surprise. Obama had all the excitement around
him. Now McCain has the excitement with Sarah. Everyone wants to know all about her. Democrats will say about Sarah what Republicans have said about Obma. Lack
of experience. But, there are X factors. Sarah could have had an abortion but chose to have a Downs Syndrome baby. Do not underestimate the effect that will
have on women voters.

Hm. Well I think he did the only thing he could to counter Obama with a running mate. I am amazed at the power the abortion thing has over there though. Its
amedical thing not political. it could also be a religious thing and I think that's what worries me about it. Church and state being separate and all that.
If a woman has moral objects to abortion then she probably won't have one. But should that stop those who don't?
But as for her, she seems a good choice - either that or he's made a terrible mistake!! |

Sarah really came out of the blue. I didn't here any of the pundits mention her name. I think she will energize the conservative Republican base that has
never been keen on McCain. Mark my word, the liberal Main Stream Media are going to be all over Sarah looking for any dirt.

What I can never get is those who claim to be prolife and are against abortion but ok with capital punishment. Yeah so they are criminals, but isn't saying
you are prolife and ok with capital punishment hypocritical? Palin may be agains abortion but she is very much in favour of capital punishment.
She is very inexperience but I don't think that means she can't do a good job. I belief if McCain surrounds himself with the right people and listens to their advise that will coiunter the inexperience on both their parts. McCain himself is extremely inexperience with fiance and economics and have said so himself. My biggest problem with McCain is his need to go to war with every tom, dick and harry. His attitude of war is just too happy for me. To go around singing songs about bomb bomb Iran is inexcusable and disgusting even if there is justification for it which IMO I don't think there is. No matter if war is justified you don't make songs about it and you do not find amusement in it. War means death and destruction and should never be trivialised. |

I thought yesterdays announcement was interesting. her 17 year old daughter being pregnant and unmarried. they twisted it to make it a good thing (not that I
am saying its not, but the spin was interesting to watch). Its a clear way of saying that she is anti abortion etc (and yes Angel I agree with the hypocrisy of
pio life as well as pro state murder and war). But I also like what Obama did, making it off limits as a political issue.

What do you think about Sarah's seventeen-year-old unwed daughter having a baby? Does that make Sarah a bad mother? Both Obama and Bidden have said
children are off limits, but the national media are having a feeding frenzy.

Maybe he's crazy for doing it... or maybe just crazy like a fox.
Let's face it, his chances of winning the election were not that great as it was before picking her as his running mate, and who knows, maybe this move will be just the unexpected way-out thing that bumps him up in the runnings. I know she seems inexperienced, but sometimes a simpler approach to things is what gets the job done. And it seems with the American public, anything goes..... It will definitely be interesting to see how this turns out. If you hold on to the handle, she said, it's easier to maintain the illusion of control. But it's more fun if you just let the wind carry you. |

I agree that the daughter should be kept out of it. Its irrelevant. However, her religious gusto does concern me.

I wasn't going to watch either Convention, but I watched Sara's speech last night because I wanted to see her in action. She is an intelligent,
competent and confident woman. She hit a Grand Slam last night. Liberals and the national media are still whining about her pregnant daughter.

I found her a little shallow and a tad scarey. I think she has the makings of a fanatic and would hae her to be a heart beat of an old man away from having
access to that button.

What the media is playing down, is the the ethics charges brought against Palin regarding the pressure brought to bear to fire her ex brother in law, an Alaska
State Trooper. It seems that when he got crosswise with the family during the divorce from Palin's sister, the family has been on his butt like a diaper
rash. Hell hath no fury.....
Another interesting issue is McCain's part in the savings and loan scandal of the 1980's where he was armpit deep in the scandal along with four other senators called The Keating Five. The senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The five senators, Alan Cranston (D-CA), Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ), John Glenn (D-OH), John McCain (R-AZ), and Donald W. Riegle (D-MI), were accused of improperly aiding Charles H. Keating, Jr., chairman of the failed Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of an investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB).. Senators McCain and Glenn played stool pigeons and left the other three senators to twist in the wind. McCain and Glenn were cleared of all charges in return for their testimony. |

Just another in a long line of scandals from both parties. The thing too many Americans don't seem to really understand is that the people who really control their country and the government are the people who control the giant industries and their lobby groups. |
